Halo
PS2 Preview by Shawn Fogarty

There has been a lot of hype going around about Halo coming to the PS2. The game is being developed and published by Bungie, it's an action/strategy game that could very well revolutionize gaming as we know it. It's not often that a title comes along that can stand out from the others in any special way but Halo may be the next groundbreaking game experience we've been waiting for.
It has already been said to be the best looking and one of the most revolutionary PC games ever!
Potential PS2 owners should consider themselves lucky that this beauty title is coming their way. The story line however is not much different than any other, a huge ship carrying 2000 humans crashes on an alien planet which is a gigantic, spinning ring in space that creates its own gravity. Of course, the local alien population do not like these strange "human" characters and set out to annihilate them.
So what else is new eh?;)
Fortunately there are some human infantry aboard the ship to help defend against the aliens and that's where the action begins.

The single player mode sees players controlling a cyborg warrior in 3rd person perspective. There is an impressive list of weapons to use like pistols with laser sight, harpoons, flame-throwers, sniper rifles, gattling gun, and even SAMS (surface-to-air missiles).
Players must also drive various vehicles for land, air and water. The jeep is the primary means of transportation and it's mounted with a powerful machine gun.

Some of the missions in the game will include searching for your comrades and trying to find ways off of the planet to search and destroy missions. You get around the world in the jeep most of the time but occasionally you'll have the chance to take a tank for a spin.
One of the aspects of Halo that particularly stand out is the superb physics engine. When firing a pistol you get the recoil and empty cartridges fly out of the gun. Vehicles like the jeep interact with the terrain according to how many bumps and hills there are. It will even kick up dirt and pebbles from around the tires. Even the suspensions of the vehicles are accurately recreated. We're talking real fine detail here.

Another amazing feat accomplished with this game is its unbelievably realistic graphics. The visuals seen in Halo are probably the best for any game yet. What gets me excited is that the current screens shots are from the PC version of the game.
Can you just imagine what the PS2 Halo will look like?
First of all the landscape textures for ground, trees and rocks blend in with each other seamlessly in most cases giving you a very richly detailed environment setting that can really only be described as mind blowing. Of course every other aspect like vehicles, weapons and characters are equally impressive. The background and sky textures are virtually photo realistic.

The most exciting aspect of the game however, is its multiplayer mode. Once the PS2 online network gets going, console gamers who own Halo may be able to play with PC owners of the game, at least PS2 owners can play against each other.
One way to describe the multiplayer mode is BIG and immerse. It's not just a straight forward seek and destroy type of gameplay, there are specific roles for each person to play. For example, one player can be driving the jeep while another is in control of the weapons! Or you could switch positions.
If you're low on ammo, look for a body and pick up their clips they left behind. The opportunity to work in teams and devise strategies is all there, one player in the jeep, another firing the weapons and another flying overhead in a jet providing the cover. The question is, will all this team co-operation and strategy ever be taken advantage of or is this just a fantasy that could never work out for real?
Well, the prospect of revolutionizing multiplayer gaming is definitely a welcomed one at least.
There should be more details about any PS2 specific features and screen shots soon.
